My interest in Sports Cars was unusual when I was growing up as a young male in the late 1950s. I occupied my time building plastic car models, enjoying Strombecker Slot Cars and reading Sports Car magazines while my friends were all normal American Kids with interest in Hot Rods.

In 1997, when I was a teenager I thought it would be fun to purchase a small sports car. There was one for sale in our town; the man was using it as a commuter car for going to work, it was not in the best of shape but with some small repairs to the steering and the installation of a fiberglass front hood assembly, it was ready, almost.

Bought this 1958 Bugeye in 1976 for $1,000. It had the original 948 cc engine, and this was the start of a lifelong love affair. I have long since upgraded to a 1275 engine, and have rebuilt and repainted her three times. She currently is sporting a bright yellow paint job, which for today's world of angry SUV's and congested highways seems a prudent choice in order to be noticed in the melee of everyday traffic.

I have wanted a little British sports car since I was a teen, and when my mid-life crisis period came around I got the bug again. So, I started looking online and locally, and found a red Triumph Spitfire I liked, at $7000. Unfortunately, my wallet was uncooperative so I continued my quest for something a little cheaper.

My father gave me his Sprite out of my seven brothers. This means so much to me, even more now that he has passed. I know he is always looking down as I work on it. I’ve had the car around ten years. Now it is almost 100%. Thanks to my son, who has helped me with it. I get so many thumbs up when I drive it around. I will be passing it down when the time comes, so it will always be in the family.

I found this car in a barn in Santa Cruz, California. The owner passed away and the family was selling his stuff. I made a very low offer not thinking that they were going to take it. In fact, they told me I was the only person that made an offer. I took the car home and my wife fell in love with that rusted little car. It took a lot of work and money but the Sprite came out gorgeous. I drive it on the weekend to shows and it’s a head turner. I want to thank Victoria British for keeping those parts coming fast and on time. -JR
